FAMILY LAW

[This page is still "under construction" and developing new content. While the current information should be of assistance to you, there will be several more updates in the weeks to come. In days past, someone who practiced Family Law was more commonly known as a "divorce attorney." Now, that description is fading into the past as Family Law attorneys are expected to assist families in a broad spectrum of subjects, to include adoptions, name changes, child support and spousal support (no longer called "alimony"), property division, custody arrangements, visitation plans, drug testing, pension distributions, restraining orders, property control, interstate determinations, legal separations, . . . and even divorces.

Individuals occasionally turn to a paralegal to assist them with working through the legal system, but these paralegals are not attorney licensed to practice. You have very specific rights and timelines which must be addressed if you are involved in an family law conflict of any kind. All too often, Family Law Attorneys find that their client pays more in the long run if their client first sees a paralegal service and then goes to the attorney to either "finish it up" or to "untangle the mess." This is not to say that paralegals or legal assistants do not have important place in the legal process, as they do. However, you may find that you will save yourself considerable costs and time if you see an attorney first and discuss with him or her the use of a paralegal to assist you.
