VOLUNTEER WORK While all attorneys licensed in the United States are expected to provide Pro Bono (free or reduced cost services to the assistance of the public), not all attorneys do. State laws and our ethical rules direct that we should help the public, if not for moral reasons then for the mere fact that we are privileged to work in the profession of the law. Unfortunately, though, in these days of smaller firms and very high cost litigation, it becomes increasingly difficult for individual attorneys to dedicate much time to cases which would not provide any fee to the attorney or the attorneys firm. Some attorneys meet their Pro Bono requirements by making donations to services or organizations which provide these services to members of the public who cannot afford it. Just some local examples in Sacramento would include: Legal Services of Northern California McGeorge School of
Laws Community Legal Services Sacramento County Bar Association Mr. Healy primarily volunteers much of this time to the Civil Air Patrol as both a pilot and legal officer. Further, Mr. Healy provides much uncompensated time in his military reserve duties and to military members (both active duty and reserve) and their families who are in need of legal assistance and cannot afford an attorney. In addition to teaching legal subjects in the University of California system, Mr. Healy also has provided Pro Bono tutoring of University of California Students. Mr. Healys volunteer efforts as a Civil Air Patrol pilot recently earned for him the CAP National Lifesaving Medal for helping a pilot in distress survive a crash landing in Yolo County.
